Extraction Site Preservation

When most types of teeth are lost or removed, dental care is needed afterwards to prevent the tooth gap from causing deformity of the jaw or problems with bite alignment. As time goes by after a tooth is removed, the rest of the teeth often shift out of position, which can eventually make chewing more difficult. An experienced dentist can help you plan for treatment and care after a tooth is removed. If you’ve lost a wisdom tooth in the back of the mouth, chances are no treatment will be needed, but if you’ve lost a tooth in any other area of the mouth, it is wise to have a skilled dentist evaluate the extraction site and make treatment recommendations.

Bone Grafting

When a tooth is going to be extracted, if bone loss is involved, then bone grafting should be done as soon as possible. Sometimes a tooth must be extracted due to an abscess or an infection, or due to extensive decay. In this case, there may already be bone loss that comes from the infection or from the inflammation surrounding the diseased area. When that happens, the tooth should be removed, and then grafting should be done immediately afterwards. This is nearly always easier and less expensive than trying to wait and reconstruct the bone later.

When teeth in the front of the mouth are extracted, the remaining bone is very thin and is at greater risk of shrinkage. This can create a “sunken” look that is unattractive and can affect the entire facial structure. So, when a tooth is extracted in front of the mouth, bone grafting right away will preserve the shape of the mouth and prevent further bone deterioration. Bone grafting should also be done after a tooth is extracted if the patient wants to have an implant later. The grafting will protect the integrity and structure of the bony layer that will be needed for the future implant.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are the current gold standard for replacing a missing tooth, or even several missing teeth. In a dental implant, an artificial root is surgically implanted into the jawbone, where it fuses with the bone over time. Dental implants are made of titanium, which is a pure substance that the body does not reject as foreign. Dental implants have a very high rate of success and are durable and long-lasting. Some configurations of dental implants can even be used to replace many missing teeth as an alternative to dentures. Dental implants look very natural and can often last for the rest of your life.
